History reference: W 1849 powstała Katedra Geografii UJ. W 1913 nazwa: Gabinet Geograficzny. W 1918 zmiana nazwy na Instytut Geograficzny UJ. W 1946 - Zakład Geografii Fizycznej UJ. W latach 1948-1961 istniały w UJ dwie jednostki: Zakład Geografii Fizycznej (od 1948 Zakład Geografii I, 1952-1969 ponownie Zakład Geografii Fizycznej) oraz Zakład Geografii II (1952-1955 Katedra Geografii Ekonomiczej, 1955-1969 Katedra Geografii Ekonomicznej z Zakładem). Jednostki te tworzyły w latach 1952-1967 Zespół Katedr Geografii. W 1968 Zespół przekształcono w Instytut Geograficzny. Od 1970: Instytut Geografii UJ. Ok. 1999 zmiana nazwy na: Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przetrzennej.
