W 1937 z połączenia Geologisch Bureau voor het Nederlandsche Mijngebied (zał. w 1924) i Rijks Geologische Dienst powstała instytucja nazwana Geologische Stichting, z siedzibą Haarlem w Holandii. W 1968 powrócono do nazwy Rijks Geologische Dienst. Od 1997 po połączeniu z Instituut voor Grondwater en Geo-Energie TNO nowa nazwa brzmi: Nederlands Instituut voor Toegepaste Geowetenschappen TNO.
